Edith Heath: A Life in Clay, will be on view at the Oakland Museum of California from January 29, 2022 through October 30, 2022. Guest curator Jennifer Volland has collaborated with OMCA Curator of Photography and Visual Culture, Drew Johnson, to create this inspiring retrospective of Edith Heath’s work, life, and design philosophy.
Edith Heath transformed our notion of ‘good design,’ pioneering a new aesthetic of natural, stylish yet functional products made from local materials and designed to endure.
The exhibition will explore Edith Heath’s legacy through early hand-thrown and production pieces, architectural tiles, clay and mineral materials, photographs, video, letters, and interactive objects. Heath’s scientific exploration of ceramics began with the desire to create beautiful, durable pieces, employing a form and style that became classic and timeless—as celebrated today as when it first emerged.
